Monthly: ALAUDA Freeform Bellydance Performance
The Latin name for a skylark bird is alauda arvensis. ALAUDA is a monthly bellydance variety show held on the third Tuesday of every month at Skylark.
Alauda showcases dancers who perform all forms of belly dance; from Cabaret to Tribal and everything in between! Any style and all levels of experience are welcome on the leopard-print stage.
Alauda is free and always all ages, from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. It has been popular since its first appearance in September 2009, so come early (an hour or more beforehand) if you want to snag a table and enjoy some tasty food and beverages with the performance.
The organizers of Alauda are Angela, Medea, and Katana. If you want to dance at this event, please contact them at alaudabellydance AT gmail.com. Visit the Alauda Facebook page
Weekly: Trivia
Trivia, hosted by Britannica, is every Wednesday at 7pm. She compiles 4 rounds, a half-time round, and a bonus round each week for your brain-teasing pleasure.
The first round is always current events (news in the headlines). One round is always chosen by the last place team from the previous week, so they get an advantage. The half-time round takes place during open mic sign-up and is sometimes a picture round or puzzle. The other two categories are a mystery until you arrive and can be anything trivial under the sun. “Weirdo cults,” maybe. Sound rounds, picture rounds, “place the umlaut over the band’s name”, “80s Saturday morning cartoons”, Jeopardy! rounds featuring real questions from real Jeopardy! shows (I mean “answers”), palindromes, and everything else nerdy and fun. Here’s a tip: Britannica isn’t a sports person, she’s asthmatic. She will grudgingly do a sports round if you are in last place and choose it, though!
The first place team at the end of the four rounds and half-time round wins half the cash instantly and the opportunity to win the other half by getting all three Bonus Round questions correct. If a question is missed, the remaining cash or “the kitty” carries over to the next week.
The entry fee is $3 per person. Team member maximum is 6 people per round. If you have a 7 person team or larger, you are welcome to rotate members each round (which essentially means, send someone off to the bar for a category they think they won’t know).
Smart phones or any other form of cheating is forbidden, of course. Don’t embarrass yourself. Questions about trivia? Contact info AT skylarkcafe.com.

Weekly: Open Mic
Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands.
Need a demo?
We can also offer you live recordings since our mixer is a Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2. Just give the sound engineer $20 (sales tax included) and take home a high-quality recording of your set to remix and tweak to your heart’s content using whatever software you want (ProTools, GarageBand, whatever). You can also give the files to your favorite audio engineer for mixing.
Some suggestions:
- add a secret live track to your EP
- supplement your facebook/myspace/bandcamp page with live tracks
- videotape your performance and sync it up later with our high-quality sound
- videotape your performance and sync it up later with our high-quality sound
- fix a flubbed note, edit out embarrassing stage banter

TEKLA’S FOUR REASONS THIS OPEN MIC RULES:
- People are becoming regulars.
- We are starting to all know each other by name and greet one another by such, not unlike the classic TV show Cheers.
- It’s forcing me to practice guitar and learn new songs.
- Longtime Skylark bartender Roger is there Tuesday nights. He’s cool.

Morning Glory Drag Brunch
Hosted by Magnolia Crawford and featuring a selection of the city’s finest drag queens, Morning Glory will start your weekend off properly with a classy brunch and a sassy performance at Skylark Cafe in West Seattle!
From 12pm to 2pm every second Saturday of the month, you’ll be entertained in style whether you buy VIP tickets or not. If you want to guarantee the best sightlines and seating you can reserve one of 12 tables.
VIP ticket holders will also be given $5 off a carafe of mimosas or bellinis (that’s a whole bottle of champagne and o.j. or peach nectar).
The brunch menu is online
NOTE TO PARENTS: Skylark’s brunch is always all ages. If you aren’t ready for your children to know that some men sometimes dress in ladies’ clothing for entertainment purposes, you might want to get your brunch before noon…or on Sunday instead. :)
