Surf The Pines
On Surf The Pines, the new long-player from Seattle-via-Ireland group of the same name, bright, melodic guitar riffs, tight song structures and harmonies, and punchy, clean production come together to offer witty, literate infectious pop-rock confections. A homage to the craft of songwriting, every element - melody, lyric, structure, and instrumentation - serves the goal of being memorable, emotionally resonant, and just downright catchy.
The musical journey behind Surf The Pines began in Ireland, when Shane Leinster’s power-pop outfit Peach found themselves being mentioned in the same breath as U2 and Hothouse Flowers. Soon folks from A&M Records – and the mighty Creation Records (Oasis, Primal Scream) – came to call. Then, as Leinster tells it, “what felt like overnight the rave scene took over, and 90s guitar pop had run its course. Peach had missed the boat.” Determined to stake new territory in a more rock-friendly locale, he flipped a coin…
“Heads” meant L.A. (tails was New York), and Leinster lived and played music there for seven years. He eventually grew tired of the City of Angels and headed north to the land of deep water and big pines. It’s in his now-native Seattle that he’s found his true musical home. Together with drummer Bill Ibsen, bassist Bardi Martin (a grade school friend of Leinster’s from Dublin and a founding member of Candlebox), and guitarist Patrick Porter, Surf The Pines find excellence with a finely tuned combination of musical craftsmanship and pop instincts. Surf The Pines debut EP Fall Apart was released in spring 2018.
Written in and around Seattle, the band settled into the historic Bob Lang studio to track the new record. “You cannot help but feel the energy, the aura, the ghosts of so many legends that have recorded there before” says Leinster. Recorded live to quintessential 2" tape, the record was engineered by Chris Rahm and produced by the legendary Don Gunn (Death Cab for Cutie, Peter Frampton, Soundgarden). In addition to the core quartet, Surf The Pines features guest vocals from Star Anna. “I have been a huge fan of Star's for the past decade” says Leinster. :I was blown away that she wanted to sing on the record. Her voice is exactly what I envisioned for this song and am so grateful that it was able to happen. I'm honored to have made a new friend.”
Thematically, Surf The Pines eloquently captures the ephemeral, slide-show reality of life as it moves on from the blush of youth. “From holding marriages together to raising kids, we’re all trying to walk the balancing beam of life and to hold it all together - for them and you” tells Leinster. “I hope that people find solace in knowing that they are not the only ones freaked out about your kids these days, that maybe all they need is love and open and honest conversations. And that it's cool to be getting old and - despite everything - life can still be amazing. That it's fucking worth it.”
So, we have Surf The Pines. A record made by folks pouring their hearts out on a record, ready to be discovered by all those searching for some melodic empathy and companionship. And loud guitars and harmonies. You know, raw, unfiltered, rock and roll…
